What is Thrive With Autism?

Thrive With Autism Foundation is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization formed to help support an ABA-based tuition-free charter school for students with autism. Thrive With Autism Foundation will also provide additional services as well as recreational opportunities. During the 2024-25 school year, Thrive Center for Success plans to serve students K through 7th grade, adding a grade level each year up to age 21. Thrive Center for Success will be the first charter school in Texas to provide all these opportunities in one location.

What is autism?

Autism is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior, causing minor or major problems. People with autism have trouble understanding what other people think and feel and may have trouble learning. Signs of autism usually occur before age 3.

Some signs of autism are high sensitivity to sounds, touches, smells or sights that seem ordinary. Other signs to note would be not looking at or listening to other people, problems using speech, gestures, facial expressions, or tone of voice. Additional indications include difficulty with change in routine, repetitive words or actions, as well as sleep and eating problems. There is no cure for autism, but early treatment can make a big difference! Therapies that help are applied behavior analysis, occupational therapy, speech therapy and feeding therapy.

What is a charter?

A charter school is a privately run, but publicly funded school, approved and held accountable by the state of Texas. The charter establishes the philosophy of the school and is smaller and more individualized. Enrollment at a charter school is by family choice. Charter schools may not charge students to attend and may not teach religion. Many federal education laws pertaining to public schools also apply to charter schools.

What is ABA?

An ABA program uses a systematic teaching approach that involves breaking skills down into small, easy-to-learn steps. Praise or other rewards are used to motivate the child. Multiple opportunities are provided to practice each skill, and progress is continuously measured to make an informed decision regarding adjustments to the child's treatment plan. ABA programs are specifically developed and designed to meet the developmental needs of each child.
